Don't Hate, Appreciate: Taylor Swift

In honour of 'Style' (MV) coming out, I have decided to make a post about the 'Queen of Pop': Taylor Swift.

I have loved Taylor since I first watched the music video for 'Teardrops on my Guitar' as a young child - the song came out in 2006 so that's about 9 years ago making me 8 at the time.

I have loved and adored Taylor for 9 amazing years, now that's cool!

Anyways, though I wasn't even into boys like that at the time I still connected to the song and Taylor; I think it's because she is just so relatable and real. Everything she sings about may not be original but the way she expresses the emotions certainly are, which is what makes her so unique and lovable.

Throughout the years, I have met many people that love Taylor as much as I do and unfortunately I have also had the misfortune to come in contact with people who HATE her; now I'm not saying that people aren't allowed to have their own opinions about artists and such but how is it fair to dislike, or even hate someone just because they're 'girly' or their target audience are generally young teenage girls.

The saddest thing is that it wasn't even the boys who were mean to me for liking TayTay, it was the girls (consumed with cool girl syndrome). Not only is that unfair to Taylor (and me) but it is seriously damaging to those girls who are essentially perpetuating self-hate, trying to isolate themselves from 'the other girls' because 'it's so not cool' to like and appreciate the things that lots of other girls do, right?

So, you can imagine my excitement when suddenly liking Taylor became the cool thing and now she is more mainstream than ever. Girls appreciating girls was really what 2014 was all about and honestly that was one of the best things about last year.

Swift has never been perfect, nor is she perfect now - she is human after all and it is super important to remember that, but over the last few years she has really developed as a person and grown to be more loving and accepting.

Remember when 'Picture to Burn' came out? The line 'I'll tell my friends you're gay' was totally inappropriate and unacceptable, but she has addressed that since with 'Welcome to New York' and targeted the LGBTA community with 'boys and boys and girls and girls' expressing the normality of homosexual behaviour - because that's what it is, completely normal.

As we all know, Taylor released 'Style' in her latest album '1989' and the lyrics 'I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt' in there really target the problematic behaviour she has once had 'she wears short skirts' [You Belong With Me] (as though Swift was better for wearing 't-shirts') - it's important to establish that these two things aren't mutually exclusive.

It's all of this and so much more that has recently boosted the popularity of Swift, she's able to connect to people on a whole new level now.

Watching Taylor grow as a person over the last 9 years has been an amazing experience and made better by being able to grow up right along her - though I am 8 years her junior.

Swift is inspirational, kind and above all a good person.
