Book Review
Rating: 3/5 Stars
The book follows a young witch, Nathan, whose mother was a white witch, they're all believed to be the 'good guy's in the novel BUT his father is the notorious black witch named 'Marcus' - the most evil black witch of all, don't disregard the other black witches though because they too are all pretty bad. That's the summary, folks. Pretty interesting, no?
I thought so too which is why I chose to read the book...however I feel like the concept turned out to be cooler than the product, unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it (hence the 3 stars) but I think that there's definitely room for improvements.
There were many things about the novel that I liked, for instance the novel starts out with an interesting second person narrative which is very unusual but I found that it worked. It brought a sense of excitement and suspense to the plot as it integrated you completely into the novel and it was a refreshing twist.
Nathan as a character I genuinely appreciated, he reminded me of another magical being that didn't let his circumstances affect his rather positive perspective in life *cough* Harry Potter *cough*. His humour and relatability as a character made me feel sympathetic towards him and led me to believe and hope in/for him.
However, I don't think all of the characters were represented as well as Nathan nor were they given the complexity of a real and understandable person. In particular, Annalise (the protagonist's main love interest) and Mercury (another 'evil' black witch) were both over-looked which was kind of annoying as they're both vital characters in the plot.
As 'Half Bad' is the first novel in the trilogy I expected it to be a lot more descriptive in order to really build the world for the readers, there were many things that left me confused and wanting more (not in the good way, more frustration). Like, why didn't Green dive further into the world of the hunters and the way they worked?
I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book, unless I knew that person was really into witches or fantasy but I am definitely interested in seeing what happens in the sequel which is already out, I believe.
